Trump’s newest warning to introduce an additional 100% tariff on products from China has been labeled a “classic case” of American hypocrisy, according to the Chinese government.

A Commerce Ministry spokesperson further commented that the nation could implement its own undisclosed “countermeasures” if the US President follows through on his threat, noting that the country was “unafraid” of a possible trade war.

This past Friday, the former president retaliated at Beijing’s move to reinforce its regulations for foreign shipments of rare earths, charging the Chinese leadership of “turning aggressive” and attempting to hold the global community “captive”.

Furthermore, he warned to cancel a arranged meeting with China’s President Xi Jinping, which was expected to take place during a conference in South Korea before the month ends.

His statements on that day rattled global markets, with the benchmark US stock index dropping 2.7%, marking its largest decline since earlier this year.

The president’s words reignited concerns of a commercial dispute between the US and China.

This past spring, the both nations had consented to eliminate high import duties on each other’s products, which had raised the prospect of commerce ceasing between the two countries.

“Turning to” tariff threats is not the right way to engage with Beijing,” their representative said.

Recently, China revealed it was tightening overseas sale regulations on rare earth minerals and further resources critical for high-technology production.

The action was viewed as a significant step, as the state handles about 90% of the planet’s critical minerals, which are utilized in items such as renewable energy components and smartphones.

The recent comments from Washington and Beijing are being interpreted by analysts as a means of enhancing bargaining power prior to future trade talks.

It is unclear whether a summit between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping, planned at a conference in the Republic of Korea before month’s end, will still proceed.
