Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack targeting an underground arms cache in Syria used by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a several access tunnels leading to the facility... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of IS following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their expertise and their valour," he added. "They were among thousands of British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an attack killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in both countries.
