Federal Reserve Reduces Interest Rates for Second Time This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank reduced interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the number of new jobs created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication when the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Shows Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that costs are going up, although slowly. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
