Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Displacement Confirmed

The Philippines has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities reported that the massive storm caused widespread sudden floods, coastal inundation, mudslides, and fierce gale-force winds, prompting the evacuation of 1.4 million people across the country.

Widespread Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, disaster response teams documented floodwaters climbing to rooftop levels and residences being swept away by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel saved fourteen people stranded on the roof surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official explained. One resident also called in panic, saying the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We rescued him and four relatives.”

By Monday, authorities confirmed two fatalities: one from drowning in Catanduanes and a second individual killed when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The super typhoon weakened to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

Per meteorological authorities, its maximum winds decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The storm system is expected to continue weakening as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service indicated it was still working to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly thousands of shelters were activated to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed hundreds of lives and left another 135 missing before moving on to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for those still missing were halted recently due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

Global warming is causing tropical storms more intense and frequent. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to impact the nation this year.

Researchers report that the frequency of intense cyclones striking the islands has increased doubled over the last two decades.

International estimates indicate that severe weather events result in approximately millions in dollars in losses to the country every year.

The nation’s leader declared a state of emergency last week because of the severe damage caused by the prior typhoon and the expected damage from the new storm.
