The speculation about the recent awards show has been intense, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious image of a desert monolith. The mystery is finally answered. Larian Studios is working on a fresh Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a audacious trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very opening of infernal gates.
A Different Direction
For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian clarified that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not being worked on now.
However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This choice of words implies that the team could be designing a faster-paced experience as opposed to another tactical title. At this moment, we can only guess, as only a announcement clip is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it pioneered the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, player agency, and deep class systems—traits that subsequently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with unique possibilities you can achieve by choosing a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.
The series is also famously open-ended, enabling players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be completed in multiple ways, sometimes in lateral fashion.
- You might find an answer because you remembered something a dog told you.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is these creative systems that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can look forward to another adventure in this groundbreaking franchise.
