Each time a prominent prize-giving event nears, one notices a clamor for the addition additional classifications to recognize overlooked contributions and fill the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.
My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize since similar to blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case supporting my request remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: There should be an award type for logic-based games.
Categorizing Game Types
Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and it will always spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil within the realm of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible for numerous titles.
Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. What category would fit them within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated in any category in 2014
- Another creative title received no nominations in 2019
- Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Just some puzzle games managed to sneak into niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
Commonly they're modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as the most-played games in the world and have been for many years.
The legendary block-stacking game challenges popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, while interacting with almost every other genre.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these include experiences without proper classification at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary game development, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
