Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay System in 2025.

Wimbledon court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.

Competitors are granted the option to contest specific decisions from the chair umpire, following the protocol already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development arrives only a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to review other decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
